TÜBİTAK Defence Industry Research and Development Institute (SAGE) was established in 1972 as the Guided Vehicles Technology and Measurement Center (GATÖM), renamed as Ballistic Research Institute (BAE) in 1983 and as Defence Industry Research and Development Institute (SAGE) in 1988. TÜBİTAK SAGE continues its activities in three campuses in Ankara: Lalahan, Beşevler and Middle East Technical University.

The Institute's goal is to make Turkey independent in defense technologies.

The mission of the Institute is to provide the defense industry with technologies, products and services with high competitiveness and added value through R&D.

The Institute takes into consideration the principles of considering the research requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces and national defense industry organizations, creating a scientific research environment worthy of TÜBİTAK, and encouraging creativity in the use of national resources to the best of its ability.

Within the framework of this purpose, the main duty of the Institute is to carry out research and development studies in cooperation with domestic and foreign organizations, when necessary, in order to meet the requirements determined by the Turkish Armed Forces and national defense industry organizations.

TÜBİTAK SAGE increases its know-how through research projects; designs and develops software and hardware through development projects; provides services through inspection, measurement and consultancy projects; and acquires the infrastructure required for the high quality products and services it aims to offer through infrastructure projects.

TÜBİTAK SAGE carries out projects with the Ministry of National Defense, Turkish Armed Forces, Presidency of Defense Industries and various defense industry organizations.

Since its establishment, TÜBİTAK SAGE has worked mainly on guided/unguided munitions and missile systems, providing the defense industry with products, knowledge, infrastructure and qualified manpower.
